International Year of Millets 5th Webinar “Empowering farmers, Indigenous Peoples, women and youths: unlocking the potentials of millets,’’ Nov. 7

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting an “IYM Global Webinar Series” focusing on the environmental, social and economic benefits of millets, as well as their rich heritage, during the International Year of Millets (IYM2023). The fifth webinar in the series, “Empowering farmers, Indigenous Peoples, women and youths: unlocking the potentials of millets,’’ will take place on November 7 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM EST. This webinar will focus on the empowerment of smallholder farmers, women, Indigenous Peoples and youths through the cultivation and consumption of millets. The keynote speech will be given by Mr Michael Fakhri, Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food and the opening and closing remarks will be given by Ms Makiko Taguchi, Agricultural Officer at Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP), FAO. The panel discussion will be led by:

  • Ms Jacqueline Hughes, Director General, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics  
  • Mr Sayed Azam-Ali, Chief Executive Officer, Crops For the Future 
  • Ms Elizabeth Mpofu, Small-Scale Organic Farmer, African women’s collaborative for healthy food systems
  • Ms Ferosta Basumatary, World President, International Movement of Catholic Agriculture and Rural Youth, member of the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples Mechanism to Committee on World Food Security 
  • Mr Ramesh Sharma, National Convenor, Ekta Parishad
